Posted December 19, 2007

On December 14, 2007 MARL had our Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting ceremony. So many of our friends and sponsors came out to help us celebrate the Grand opening of the new Gertrude C. Ford Animal Welfare Center.

Below are a few pictures taken during that time and offer a tour of our facility. Enjoy the slideshow!

Justin the Japanese Snow Macaque
Posted July 9, 2007

On May 15, 2007 the Mississippi Animal Rescue League was asked by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks to house and care for a Japanese Snow Macaque. This monkey had been taken from his mother at the age of two weeks and was being raised as a child. A child that had had all its teeth removed and castrated so that he could not hurt anyone. That theory was blown to bits when he managed to bite and scratch an IRS agent.

Monkeys are not pets and cannot be domesticated. Under the supervision and care of MARL Justin is now learning what it is like to be a monkey and soon will be traveling to the Texas Primate Sanctuary where he will be with others of his own kind. If you would like to see the sanctuary go to www.api4primates.org

As most of you know MARL never turns an animal away, but when we receive exotics the cost for their care is very high due to the specialized food and care they need. Transportation to the sanctuary will be costly as well as it is nearly 700 miles. If you would like to help with the cost of this monkey please send a donation to: MARL, 5221 Greenway Dr., Jackson, MS 39204 or click on the Guidestar button below to donate on-line.
