MARL E-NEWSLETTER MAY 2008

The Mississippi Animal Rescue League was privileged to be chosen as one of the sites for the HSUS/HSI (Humane Society International) intern program. For the past week we have had Dr. Mohamed Shehata here from Egypt. Dr. Shehata is a veterinarian and works at the Egyptian Society of Animal Friends, an animal shelter in Cairo, where in addition to dogs and cats they provide free care to over 200,000 burros and horses a year.

While here, Dr. Shehata interned with Dr. Lee Coward at Pineview Animal Hospital, watching his technique on spay/neuter and Dr. Donald Vice, Equine veterinarian in Madison where he assisted on an emergency horse call. Of course we worked him to death here at MARL.

However, it was not all work for him. I escorted him to the Jackson Zoological Park where he got to meet their staff and tour the zoo and the zoo hospital. He also asked to see the Mississippi River, since he lives on the Nile in Egypt, and I took him to the Military Park as well. The Welcome Center in Vicksburg was thrilled to meet him and nothing would do until they got his picture holding up a sign of Mississippi.

We feel that this was a real feather in our cap as well as for the State of Mississippi.

It looks like our summer camp program is going to be very successful. The Pooches and Purrs camp is completely full and we only have a few openings for the older group - Making A Difference program.

We have extended the deadline for our BEST IN SHOW cookbook until May 31. This is also a chance to get your pets picture in the book. Like our calendar/planner, the cookbook will feature BEST IN SHOW pet photo pages. They can join the pet photos of the stars, Doris Day for one. For recipe submission go to our web site www.msarl.org and click on Events link where you will find links to the submission form and recipe guidelines. You may also contact Rebecca Ezell, 601-898-3869 or E-Mail rebeccaezell@bellsouth.net.

Now I know that all you Southern cooks have some fantastic recipes. I'm a Yankee and I sent in two. The proceeds go to help the animals at MARL, so please take a few minutes and submit a recipe or two.

Don't forget the Fur Ball, Thursday, September 18, 2008. Being held at the CEDARS from 6-10 p.m.

Tickets are $60 per person or $110 a couple. Some really unique silent auction items will be available. Again, for more information contact Rebecca Ezell at 601-898-3869.

GOOD NEWS, GOOD NEWS! Check these stats!
Adoption, April 2007 - 76 pets adopted and 21 returned to owners.
Adoption, April 2008 - 134 adopted and 26 returned to owners.
Since we have been in the new shelter our adoptions are way up. Isn't that wonderful?

SPECIAL NEEDS FOR THE SHELTER:
• Gas power chain saw with 20 inch bar.
• Gas power heavy grade weed eater
• Gas power pole saw with extending pole

And lets not forget our financial needs. While our new shelter enables us to provide for the animals care and needs better, it is also more costly. Bigger, better and much more expensive. We need your financial help. If you would like to donate for the animals you can send your donations to: MARL, 5221 Greenway Drive, Jackson, MS 39209 or go to our web site at www.msarl.org and click on the Guidestar button.

We want each and everyone of you to know how much we appreciate your support of the Mississippi Animal Rescue League. Thank You.
