MARL E-NEWSLETTER APRIL 2008
Our building stood fast during all the storms and none of the animals were hurt. Some were scared as we all were, but none the worse for wear. Some of our staff had damages to their homes. We were lucky, nothing major. Know that many of you had damages to your houses and property as well, we hope that things will be back to normal soon.
We want to give special thanks to Clear Channel Radio for their exceptional promotion of our Breakfast with the Easter Bunny event. It was very successful and a lot of fun. Dogs were dressed up in their Easter best.

Many of the children entering the Easter Egg Hunt found real Gold dollars in their eggs and of course there was plenty of candy and goodies to go around.
Two of our members, Traci and Paul Malony spend their weekends trapping animals that are running loose on the highways, living in ditches and behind businesses. All the animals are brought to MARL for care and the hopes of finding a loving home. We can't thank Traci and Paul enough. It takes a lot of patience and perseverance to trap animals that have been on their own and have gotten "street wise." They seem to have the formula down pat.
We want to remind everyone again of our summer camp programs. We are all excited about this. This will be our opportunity to provide a sense of compassion and respect for living beings through enriching activities, educational curriculum, and hands-on experiences that are rewarding for the kids and animals alike!
Each session is tailored to the appropriate age group. Each session will provide age appropriate unique opportunities for campers to learn about animal welfare, animal safety, responsible pet care, and assist with the care and obedience training for our shelter animals.
First camp session is: POOCHES & PURRS SUMMER CAMP: starts Tuesday, July 8 through Saturday, July 12, from 10:30 - 4:00 and is open to 9-13 year olds.
Second session is MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR ANIMALS: Starts Tuesday, July 22 through Saturday, July 26, from 10:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and is open to 14 - 18 year olds.
Each session costs $100.00 per camper and is limited to 10 students. For an application please E-Mail me at aileenem@netdoor.com or call 601-969-1671.
The Mississippi College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa has taken on the Mississippi Animal Rescue League as their community service project. Some of the young ladies have been coming by the shelter to volunteer, others have donated pet food and supplies. All of them have been very gracious and supportive and we appreciate their willingness to help the animals.
While it's not summer time yet, this is Mississippi where it can be 55 degrees one day and 82 the next. Often we like to take our pets with us as we run our daily errands. But during warm weather, the inside of your car can reach 120 degrees in a matter of minutes, causing heat stroke or death, even if you are parked in the shade and the windows are open. Dogs and cats can't perspire and can only dispel heat by panting and through the pads of their feet.
Even Fred wants air conditioning
You're only going to be in the store for a minute? Fred says "Describe a minute!" First you have got to get in the store, find what you want and then get in the check-out line. "A minute?" I don't think so. Don't take a chance, please leave your pet at home. If you do happen to see a pet in a car alone during the hot summer months, alert the management of the store where the car is parked. If the owner does not return promptly, call local animal control or the police department immediately.
Items needed at the Shelter:
• Gift certificates to: Office Depot, Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart and Garden Works.
• Anti-Bacterial Hand Soap
• Puppy Chow (Please!)
• Kitten Chow (Pretty Please!)
• Laundry detergent
• Bath tissue and paper towels
• Adam Flea Shampoo
• Bales of Hay
• Heavy duty quart size spray bottles
Along with hot weather comes kittens and puppies, puppies and kittens and the expense of providing them with vaccinations, de-worming, bathing and of course their spay/neuter surgery.
Our greatest need in the summer is financial, with higher utility bills and gas prices soaring, the need is great. Any help you would be willing to give would be greatly appreciated. You can mail donations to MARL, 5221 Greenway Drive Ext., Jackson, MS 39204 or you can go to our web site at www.msarl.org and click on the Guidestar button.
We want each and everyone of you to know how much we appreciate your support of the Mississippi Animal Rescue League. Thank You.
