On a sadder note, The Mississippi Animal Rescue League lost one of it's dearest friends and a staunch champion of animal welfare this week. Dr. Timon G. Dukes, our veterinarian passed away February 29, 2008.
Since 1974 he served as our veterinarian and was on our Board of Directors; he was also responsible for spaying and neutering over 23,000 animals during the last 34 years. That computes into millions of lives being saved by preventing the birth of surplus puppies and kittens and all of their offspring The surgical hospital at MARL is named in his honor and he will be greatly missed, not only by his family, but all of us at MARL who were privileged to work with and know him. He was our "Beacon of Light."
Don't forget the Saint Paddy's Pet Parade on Saturday, March 15th. Registration fee is $5.00 per person and you dress your pet up and parade him/her in front of the judges for prizes and awards. Pet Parade registration is in front of the Old Capitol Building and registration is from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Pet Parade starts at 10:00.
For the first time the Mississippi Animal Rescue League will offer a summer camp program for children who would like to learn about animals, what it takes to operate a shelter and hands on experience with our animals.
Camps are divided into two groups. Each session will provide age appropriate unique opportunities for campers to learn about animal welfare, animal safety, responsible pet care, and assist with the care and obedience training for our shelter animals.
First camp session is: POOCHES & PURRS SUMMER CAMP: starts Tuesday, July 8 through Saturday, July 12, from 10:30 - 4:00 and is open to 9-13 year olds.
Second session is MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR ANIMALS: Starts Tuesday, July 22 through Saturday, July 26, from 10:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and is open to 14 - 18 year olds.
Registration fee for each session is $100.00 and includes snacks and their tee-shirt. Camper bring a brown bag lunch. Sessions are limited to 10 campers each.
FYI:
• 75% of dog owners treat their dogs to rides in the family car
• 24% of pet owners take their dog to work
• 25% of cat owners blow dry their cats hair after a bath
• 95% of all cat owners admit they talk to their cats
• 27% of pet owners have their pets' photographed with the family, Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny.
• 32% of pet owners turn on the television or radio for pets home alone during the day.
YES! We spoil our pets as we should!
Items needed at the Shelter:
• Gift certificates to: Office Depot, Garden Works (for our landscaping), and Lowes.
• Rinse Free Hand Sanitizer
• Anti-Bacterial Hand Soap
• Laundry detergent
• Oval shape toilet seat covers for our cats. (They love them)
• Our most pressing need is financial. Gas and electric are running us $3,000 a month, * Increased gasoline prices have effected us in many areas - - of course, gas for our trucks, sanitation pick-up service, and veterinary supplies. Insurance for our new building is an excess of $25,000.
We want each and everyone of you to know how much we appreciate your support of the Mississippi Animal Rescue League. Thank You.
